We’ve been taking a look at lowfat air fryers recently here at Kitchenables, and whilst they’re very good there’s simply nothing quite like a proper deep fried chip! Today we’re taking a look at a traditional deep fat fryer, and one of the cheapest models around, the Breville VDF059.
The VDF059 certainly looks the part, with a professional-style stainless steel body giving it a modern look.
It can hold up to 3 litres of oil, and 1kg of food. By our reckoning, this should make it big enough for up to four people, so it has enough room for family use.
An immersed heating element does the cooking, and it has a variable temperature control so that you can get the exact crispness that you like. There are indicators for both the power and the temperature; when the temperature light goes off you’re ready to get cooking!
One of the unique things about this fryer is its “Cool Zone Technology”.
This technology ensures that any stray pieces of food that have made their way into the oil don’t burn and contaminate it. This means that your oil lasts much longer, saving you time and money.
Also included are cool touch handles so that you don’t burn yourself while the fryer is hot.
There’s cord storage in the base, and the device disassembles for easy cleaning (and some of the bits can go in the dishwasher).
We found that most deep fat fryers were cheapest at Amazon.co.uk, including the Breville VDF059 which is currently available new for 50% off.

Customer Feedback and Reviews
So let’s see what the customers thought about this fryer. In all, the vast majority of customers were happy with their purchase. 93% rated the machine with 3 stars above, and in fact 87% of all customers gave the machine a top score of 4 or 5 stars.
So what did people like?
Most people bought the fryer in order to make chips, and it does this like a champ! Everyone loved them; evenly cooked, golden, crisp and delicious! At the right temperature, the VDF059 takes just 10 to 15 minutes to make the kind of chips that make chip-lovers really happy!
Customers had a lot of praise for the machines ability in cooking other foods too. One customer had even used it to fry fresh homemade doughnuts!
As well as cooking quickly and efficiently, the fryer doesn’t take long to heat up either. It takes between 5 to 10 minutes to heat up the oil, depending on the temperature that you’ve selected. In all, you can have a plate of delicious chips ready in 20 minutes!
Breville haven’t really explained how the Cool Zone technology works, but customers reported that it does work, and works well. Several people were quick to point out that their oil now lasts much longer than they’ve experienced with any previous fryer. This is definitely a nice little money saver, and let’s face it, every little helps.
If you want to store the fryer in a cupboard, it should be small enough to do so. People liked the way that the basket handle folds in so that it doesn’t take up any excess room. A nice little touch.
So were there any problems? Well, yes, there are a few downsides.
First off, the lid that you can see in the product picture isn’t actually a lid. It’s simply a dust cover, and mustn’t be used while the fryer is hot. That is a little misleading, and it does mean that quite a lot of steam escapes while cooking. The results speak for themselves though, so it’s not the end of the world.
Finally, quite a lot of people mentioned that the build quality felt rather flimsy. Of course, we’d much rather invest in a robust and well made fryer, but at the same time no customers reported any breakages so it seems to hold up to the task. Still, if you use your fryer a lot you might want to find something a bit more solid.
The Breville VDF059 is a pretty good fryer. It’s not the most robust machine in the world, but it certainly makes great food, and the price is right too.
