Krups Nespresso Pixie XN300540 Coffee Machine Review

Bean to cup coffee machines are great if you love a real cup of coffee, but they can be a bit of a hassle to use and maintain. Let’s face it, sometimes you just need a coffee as quick as possible! If that sounds like you, then the Krups Nespresso Pixie could well be for you. This machine takes pods, and is intended to be quick and simple. It can have an espresso ready in just 25 seconds!

The Nespresso Pixie is specifically designed for convenience. For a start, it’s one of the more compact coffee makers available. You shouldn’t have any trouble fitting it into pride of place on your kitchen worktop.

It’s a nice looking machine too, sporting a cool looking retro design with a sleek up-to-date edge to it as well. It’s available in three modern colours which should look great in any kitchen; titanium, red, and blue.

If you appreciate simplicity, the Pixie should be right up your alley. Simply slot in a coffee pod, place your cup on the tray, and select the size you want. You should have a nice hot cup of coffee ready to drink well within a minute; 25 seconds for an espresso.

As well as the espresso setting, there is a lungo setting for larger drinks. One unique and handy feature is that the cup sizes are programmable. If you want to fill a larger mug, simply hold onto the button until it’s full. The next time you come back to the machine, it will remember how much water your mug took and will dispense the same amount!

The machine comes with a welcome pack of coffee capsules. There are 16 varieties to choose from, and the machine comes with one of each so that you can decide on your favourite. Each pod is hermetically-sealed in order to preserve coffee aromas.

Don’t throw away your used capsules away though. There’s no waste with this machine. Nespresso operate a completely free recycling service. That’s right, they’ll collect and recycle your used capsules for free!

The tank holds 1 litre of water, and there’s a low level indicator light to let you know when it needs topping up.

A common problem with these machines is that people simply forget to turn them off (most people are used to kettles). Thankfully, this machine has an auto-off feature. After 9 minutes of no use, it’ll power off and save on your electricity bill. No more leaving it on all night by mistake!

Another great thing about this machine is the 2 year warranty. Not stopping at the usual return to base deal, if your Nespreso machine needs servicing you’ll be supplied with a temporary replacement whilst your own machine is repaired!

We found that most coffee machines were cheapest at Amazon.co.uk, including the Nespresso Pixie which is currently available for 21% off.

Customer Feedback and Reviews

Well it all sounds great, but what do the coffee lovers think? We’ve collected together all the customer feedback and comments that we could, and found that 92% of people were happy with their purchase. In fact, all of that 92% rated the machine very highly with 4 or 5 stars. Top marks then!

What did they like about it?

First off, people liked the compact design. This is one of the smallest coffee machines on the market, and should fit nice and snug into anyone’s kitchen. It is a bit bigger than a kettle, but not hugely so, so even if you’ve got a small kitchen it should be suitable. Very good news considering the amount of gadgets that clutter our kitchen worktops these days!

It’s fast too. If you want an espresso, it should be ready in way under a minute. A longer drinker takes, well, longer! But it’s a very quick machine, and simple too. Pop in your capsule, position your cup, and hit the button.

People really liked the option to program the dispensed amount. A lot of people like their coffee in a mug, and a lot of espresso machines come up short. Not this one though. Simply hold onto the button to dispense more water, and the machine will remember the perfect amount for your mug the next time around! An ingenious addition.

So what about the coffee (after all that’s what it’s all about)?

People had nothing but good things to say about it. By all accounts, this machine makes a great coffee. The espresso has a constant and reliable flavour, and a nice thick crema on the top every time (the hallmark of good coffee).

Obviously, if you’re looking for a machine that makes cappuccino and latte, then this one probably isn’t for you. You’ll need a bean to cup machine with a frothing arm for that, such as the De’Longhi ESAM4200. But if you love an espresso or cafe au lait, the Pixie does a wonderful job.

Customers also appreciated the auto-off feature. There’s no way you’re going to forget to turn it off and waste electricity over night. After 9 minutes, the power will automatically be cut – even if you do forget!

Finally, the machine is a breeze to keep clean. You don’t need to remove the capsule each time, as it will automatically remove and store up to 10 capsules in an internal waste bin. This is very handy, and also makes it easy to collect up your capsules for recycling via the free collection and recycling service!

So what were the downsides? Every kitchen gadget has some, unfortunately!

Some people didn’t like the fact that the output of the machine isn’t boiling hot, like it would be from a kettle. Unfortunately, that is simply the best way to make coffee! Boiling water can actually ruin the taste and aroma of good coffee, so it’s generally recommended to use water that’s 70 to 80 degrees for the best results.

If you do insist on a hotter cup, you can either fill the tank with hot water, or give your mug a warm in the microwave (but this is far from recommended as boiling water doesn’t make for great coffee).

Another downside is that the machine is kind of noisy. We half expected this, as almost all coffee makers tend to be on the noisy side. Behind the scenes, the water is being pumped at high pressure. Indeed, the Pixie incorporates an extraction system that pumps at up to 19 bar pressure; just as strong as a professional coffee machine. Still, it’s nice and quick so its not like you have to put up with any noise for long!

If you’d love to drinking proper espresso coffee at home, without the fuss of a bean to cup machine, the Krups Nespresso Pixie XN330540 does a really good job. Its compact design means it’s also a good choice for people who can’t fit a larger machine into their kitchen. If you’re an espresso fan, you’re going to love it!
