For many coffee lovers, owning a professional bean to cup coffee machine would be a dream come true. The problem is that they can cost £1000 or more. That’s not the case with the De’Longhi Magnifica ESAM4200, an automatic espresso machine that you can pick up online for under £250! But is it any good? Let’s take a look.
The Magnifica has everything that you’ll find in a professional espresso machine. It’ll take care of the process from start to finish, providing you with a fresh cup of coffee at the touch of a button.
All you need to do is supply the machine with coffee beans. It’ll grind them with its built-in burr grinder, brew your coffee by pushing water through the grounds using its professional 15 bar pump pressure, and deliver the coffee to your cup. As well as beans, you can use pre-ground coffee too.
If you prefer to have more control over the coffee that goes into your cup, you can do that as well. Everything from the quantity to the temperature can be controlled according to your tastes. The built-in grinder has 7 different coarseness settings, allowing you to control the strength of your coffee too.
You can get an Espresso or Americano at the touch of a button, but if you’re a Latte or Cappuccino fan then you’re in luck too!
The Magnifica has a dual boiler system with a frothing arm for steaming and frothing your milk. This is the key to getting those Cappucinos and Lattes just the way they serve them in Starbucks and Costa.
One of the coolest things about this machine, is that you don’t have to constantly empty out the used coffee grounds. The machine automatically tips them out internally, you’ll just need to empty out the container once in a while when the machine tells you it’s full.
It’ll also keep you informed when maintenance is required, including when it’s time for descaling and when the water tank needs refilling.
When you buy a De’Longhi coffee machine, you’ll get access to their Coffee Club too. This gives you access to video guides on making the perfect coffee, free gifts, accessory offers and discounted servicing after 12 months. They’ll also throw in a twin-pack descaler free of charge when you join!
Most coffee machines are cheapest at Amazon.co.uk, including the DeLonghi ESAM4200 which is currently available for [getpercent] off.

Customer Feedback and Reviews
The De Longhi ESAM4200 is the best selling coffee machine on the market. We had no problem collecting together several hundred customer comments; this is one popular machine! We found that 91% of customers would recommend it. 88% were extremely happy with their purchase, giving it 4 or 5 stars: top marks.
So what did people like?
First off, it can’t be denied that this package is very good value for money. You’re getting all the features of a top-of-the-line coffee maker, for under £250!
Almost every customer who left a comment agreed, the Magnifica makes a darn good coffee! With a little experimentation to find the settings you like, you should be able to quite easily adjust the machine to your tastes. If you like an Espresso or an Americano, you can have your coffee made at the touch of a button.
If you’re more of a Latte or Cappuccino fan, you’ll find that the milk frother works really well too. Again, a bit of practice with this is required (there’s an art to it), but people were soon making thick and frothy milk for their coffees.
People reported a great crema on top of their drink; a sure sign of a good coffee. Although, as you might expect, the amount of crema varies somewhat depending on what strength you have decided on.
Simply put, this machine makes really good coffee. Even customers who left negative comments said so!
The option to use both beans and pre-ground coffee was popular, with most customers opting for the latter. Lavazza coffee was a popular choice.
Whilst it’s obviously bigger than a kettle, for a coffee machine the ESAM4200 is rather compact. People reported that it takes up a reasonable amount of space on the kitchen worktop, and there were no complaints from people who found it too big.
One simple little addition, which makes the machine so much easier to use, is the fact that the water tank is filled from the front of the machine. This seems like an obvious feature to include, but so many coffee machines expect you to fill it from the back, which is clearly unintuitive. Being able to fill from the front is much more practical, and a welcome little touch that makes the machine even easier to use.
Customers also said that the Magnifica is nice and easy to clean. As we already mentioned, used coffee grounds are tipped out automatically into an internal container. When the container is full, the machine will let you know that it needs to be emptied.
The drip tray and the coffee grounds tray are both removable, and everything else simply wipes clean.
Of course, no kitchen gadget is perfect, and there were a few criticisms.
By far the most common, was that the machine is a tad on the noisy side. Most coffee makers tend to be (the pumps can be quite high pressure), so this is not necessarily a failing of this particular model. Still, it’ll make your coffee pretty quickly so it’s not like you need to put up with the noise for very long.
Some people felt that the machine was a little on the flimsy side. The bulk of the outer casing is made of plastic, however, for the price this is probably to be expected. There were some reports of failed machines, however there were just as many people who said that the machine held up perfectly under heavy use. Several people were using the Magnifica in an office environment, where they were obviously making a lot of cups of coffee!
Another flaw, is that if you use the forther arm, you’ll then need to wait for 10 minutes before you can brew any more coffee. This gives the machine time to cool down again to the right temperature for brewing. It’s not really a major problem, you just to need make sure to brew your coffee first, before frothing the milk.
All things considered, the De’Longhi Magnifica ESAM4200 is an excellent machine. You’re getting all the features of a professional (and expensive) coffee machine in a package that costs less than £250. This is excellent value by anyone’s standards. It’s versatile, and makes a great cup of coffee too!
